Course Description: This nationally accredited course is designed for those who are wanting to lead climb at pre-bolted sport climbing venues. It is suitable for those who have climbed indoors or outdoors and are wanting to progress into climbing as a 'Leader'.  

 

What you can expect to learn:

  • How to select suitable venues and routes

  • How to identify potential hazards in sport climbing venues

  • How to set-up a bottom rope system to climb on

  • How to clean a sport route including a 're-thread'.

  • Effective climbing movement techniques

  • Effective climber / belayer communication

  • How to use various sport climbing equipment

  • What to do in case of an emergency

  • About the local environment and how we can protect it as climbers

 

Who is it for / Pre-requisites: 

This course is for those who have some climbing experience and would like to progress onto learning how to lead climb at sport climbing venues. This course does not cover leader placed protection for traditional climbing, however it can be a nice progression into traditional climbing. Candidtaes are expected to have logged 20 indoor or outdoor climbs and have belayed 20 times. Although not a requirement, if you have no outdoor climbing experience, we would recommend the Improver Climbing experience first.

Location and Travel Arrangements: 

The course will meet at the Pool Cafe in Hathersage, S32 1DU (unless advised otherwise during booking). The group will then travel to a local crag for the remainder of the day. Clients will be expected to provide their own transport unless alternative arrangements are made in advance. Where possible we can collect clients from Bamford train station.

By Car: Please follow postcode S32 1BB, which will bring you to Hathersage in Derbyshire.

By Train: Travel to Bamford Station in Derbyshire.

Local facilities: At the beginning of the day you will have access to food, drink and toilet facilities at the café. When we arrive at the crag there will be NO FACILITIES available.

What you should bring

    • Suitable non-restrictive clothing including warm layers, wind/waterproof jacket

    • Hat and gloves (optional)

    • Suitable footwear with ankle support for the walk-in

    • Parking fee (if required) 

    • Hair ties for anyone with long hair

    • Food and drink
