Skills Course: Mountain Skills - Mountain Training Accredited

 

Course Description: A Mountain Skills course is ideal for those with some walking experience wishing to start adventuring into more mountainous terrain. A good base level of fitness will be required but the focus will be on learning new techniques rather than maximising distance and reaching summits. This course will take place in Snowdonia, North Wales.

 

Topics covered:

  • How to plan a walk

  • Walking skills used in the hills

  • How to equip yourself

  • Navigation techniques to carry out your route

  • Knowledge of the surrounding environment

  • Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills

 

Who is it for / Pre-requisites: 

This course is for anyone with an interest in Hill Walking, either with no experience at all or with some experience but a desire to learn new skills / refresh existing skills.

Location and Travel Arrangements: 

The course will meet at the Plas Y Brenin National Mountain Centre in Capel Curig, LL24 0ET. (unless advised otherwise during booking). The group will then travel to a local venue for the remainder of the day. Clients will be expected to provide their own transport unless alternative arrangements are made in advance. Where possible we can collect clients from Llandudno train station.

By Car: Please follow postcode LL24 0ET, which will bring you to Plas Y Brenin in Capel Curig.

By Train: Travel to Llandudno Station in North Wales.

Local facilities: At the beginning of the day you will have access to food, drink and toilet facilities at the centre. When we are out on the hill there will be NO FACILITIES available until the end of the day.

 

Accommodation: We do not provide accommodation but can make recommendations upon request.​​

There are also numerous Air B&B's and Holiday Cottages based in and around Capel Curig and the surrounding areas.

What you should bring

    • Suitable non-restrictive clothing including warm layers, windproof jacket

    • Waterproof jacket and trousers

    • Hat and gloves / suncream (weather dependent)

    • Suitable footwear with ankle support. Walking boots recommended

    • Parking fee (if required) 

    • Food and drink for a full day of activity
