Skills Course: Rock Skills Learn to Lead Trad - Mountain Training Accredited

 

Course Description: This nationally accredited course is designed for those who are wanting to lead climb using traditional protection i.e. placing nuts, hexes, cams to safeguard yourself up the route.  It is suitable for those who have done some 'seconding' and are wanting to progress into climbing as a 'Leader'.  For those with less experience it is highly reccommended to take the Rock Skills Intermediate first, as this builds the foundation skills to best access the Learn to Lead Trad course.

 

What you can expect to learn:

  • Using a guidebook

  • How to identify potential hazards in trad climbing venues

  • Trad climbing equipment

  • Lead belaying

  • Effective climbing movement techniques

  • Placing trad gear (Hexes, Nuts, Cams)

  • Building belays

  • Placing protection whilst on lead

  • What to do in case of an emergency

  • About the local environment and how we can protect it as climbers

 

Who is it for / Pre-requisites: 

This course is for those who have some climbing experience as a second and would like to progress onto learning how to lead climb using leader placed protection. Candidtaes are expected to have lseconding 20 ‘very difficult’ climbs and belaying 20 times OR having lead climbed 20 routes indoors or outdoors.. Although not a requirement, if you have less climbing experience it would be reccommended to take the Rock Skills Intermediate course first, as this builds all the nescessary skills to prepare you for a learn to lead course.

Location and Travel Arrangements: 

The course will meet at the Pool Cafe in Hathersage, S32 1DU (unless advised otherwise during booking). The group will then travel to a local crag for the remainder of the day. Clients will be expected to provide their own transport unless alternative arrangements are made in advance. Where possible we can collect clients from Bamford train station.

By Car: Please follow postcode S32 1BB, which will bring you to Hathersage in Derbyshire.

By Train: Travel to Bamford Station in Derbyshire.

Local facilities: At the beginning of the day you will have access to food, drink and toilet facilities at the café. When we arrive at the crag there will be NO FACILITIES available.

What you should bring

    • Suitable non-restrictive clothing including warm layers, wind/waterproof jacket

    • Hat and gloves (optional)

    • Suitable footwear with ankle support for the walk-in

    • Parking fee (if required) 

    • Hair ties for anyone with long hair

    • Food and drink
