Leadership Course: Lowland Leader - Mountain Training Accredited

 

Course Description: The Lowland Leader Qualification enables leaders to take groups on day walks in the countryside and woodland of the United Kingdom and Ireland, in summer conditions. It is ideal for people who work with Duke of Edinburgh groups, school groups, scout groups etc who want to confidently lead people on paths in Lowland Countryside.

The qualification consists of 3 parts:

Training - 2 day course delivered by a Lowland Leader Course Provider

Consolidation - a period of time after the training course, to practise and refine the skills learnt during the training course

Assessment - 2 day assessment with a Lowland Leader Course Provider.

 

Topics covered:

  • How to use maps

  • Navigation techniques and planning legs

  • Leadership strategies and group management

  • Environmental knowledge

  • Managing hazards and emergency procedures

  • The effect of weather

  • The equipment we carry

  • Legislation and legal requirements

 

Who is it for: 

This course is ideal for people wishing to work with Duke of Edinburgh groups, school groups, scout groups etc who want to confidently lead people on paths in Lowland Countryside.

 

Training Pre-requisites: 

  • You must be 17 years old

  • You must have a genuine interest in Low Level Walking and the supervision of groups

  • You must be registered on the qualification.

  • You must have an up-to-date logbook (preferably DLOG) with evidence of 10 varied walks in low level terrain OR have attended a walking and navigation personal skills training course recognised by Mountain Training, for example a Hill Skills course

What to bring

  • Maps (OL1 and OL24)
  • Compass

  • ​Map Pens

  • ​Suitable hillwalking clothing (warm layers)​

  • ​Walking boots

  • Rucksack​​

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Hat and gloves / suncream (weather dependent)

  • Packed lunch, drink and snacks

  • Parking fee (if required) 

  • ​Notepad / phone for taking notes

Location and Travel Arrangements: 

The course will meet at the Cross Scythes Pub in Totley Pool Cafe in Hathersage, S32 1DU (unless advised otherwise during booking). The group will then travel to a local Hillwalking venue for the remainder of the day. Clients will be expected to provide their own transport unless alternative arrangements are made in advance. Where possible we can collect clients from Dore and Totley Train Station. 

By Car: Please follow postcode S17 4AE, which will bring you to Hathersage in Derbyshire.

By Train: Travel to Dore and Totley Train Station in Sheffield.

Local facilities: At the beginning of the day you will have access to food, drink and toilet facilities at the Pub. When we out on the hill there MAY NOT be access to toilet facilities depending on the route we have planned.
